Ahvaz is the capital and largest city of Khuzestan province in Iran. It is located in the southwest of Iran, in the vicinity of the Karun River. The city has over 2 million inhabitants at the moment.
It is a very old city, date back to the Sassanid and Achaemenid era, but its recent development is due to the discovery of oil in its vicinity in the 20th century.
Ahvaz is one of the hottest cities in the world, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 55 °C and sometimes reaching 65 °C. In winter the temperature can drop to 0 °C but it never snows. The climate is desert-like and rainfall is very rare, with an average of 230 mm/year.
