Characteristics and history of Rudkhan Castle

Rudkhan Castle has an area of 26 hectares, 65 towers and ramparts, and a wall 1500 meters long. Some experts believe that the construction of the castle belongs to the Sassanid era and coincides with the Arab invasion of Iran. On the inscription at the entrance of the castle, which is now kept in the Rasht Treasure Museum, it is written that this castle was rebuilt in 918-921 AH for Sultan Hossamuddin, the ruler of “Beypas”. 40 watchtowers surround the castle, whose octagonal rooms are covered with dome arches. All around the walls and towers, there are sloping openings that are built for pouring molten materials and shooting. It should be noted that throughout the castle’s history, no enemy has ever penetrated it and failed to conquer it. During the Seljuk period, this castle was rebuilt and was one of the fighting bases of the Ismailis of Alamut.

Rudkhan Castle consists of two parts, the citadel, and the fort. The citadel is located in the western part of the building on two floors and is made of brick. The houses in the eastern part are on two floors with many skylights and openings dominating the surroundings. There is also a spring between the castle and its deepest place.

The eastern part of the castle includes twelve entrances, a prison, an emergency door, a bath, and a waterhole. The western part has twelve entrances, a spring, a pond, a reservoir, a cold room, a bath, a reservoir, a palace, and some residential units surrounded by a tower and a rampart are the other buildings of this part. All around the walls and towers, there are sloping openings that are built for pouring molten materials and shooting.
